Green Flag Presentations at Lifetime Lab
Over two days ( March 10th and 11th ), junior environmentalists from eighty (80) primary, secondary and special schools will be receiving their "Green Flag" at a special ceremony at Lifetime Lab.
Green-Schools, known internationally as Eco-Schools, is an international environmental education programme , environmental management system and award scheme that promotes and acknowledges long-term, whole school action for the environment.
Recent research on the economic value of the Green-Schools programme to schools in Ireland has revealed that the programme has saved schools in Ireland a minimum 2 million euro in waste, electricity, water and fuel costs this year. The results reveal a minimum of 12 tonnes of waste diverted from landfills in Ireland every school day by schools undertaking the programme, 3.7 million unit of electricity saved this year, 200 million litres of drinking water saved this year and around 500,000 litres of transport fuel saved this year. Currently, research is being undertaken to assess the savings in heating oil and gas for schools involved in Green-Schools
Over 3,240 primary, secondary and special schools in Ireland (<80% of all Irish schools) are currently taking part in the programme with the Irish Green-Schools programme one of the most successful internationally; one of the main factors is the partnership between the Environmental Education Unit of An Taisce and Local Authorities.
Lifetime Lab is delighted to be hosting the event, 'Lifetime Lab promotes sustainable living through onsite interactive exhibits, classroom workshops and onsite work practices, in fact almost 80% of the energy consumed by Lifetime Lab is from renewable sources. The Green Schools programme reinforces our message of promoting, understanding and building a better future", says Mervyn Horgan, manager Lifetime Lab.
