Hi !
we are proposing to carry out a Traffic Count of Cyclists entering the city centre some morning in late march / early april. (date to be decided)
Cork City Council Traffic Department only have enough resources to carry out one general tarffic count per year - usually at the end of October. The weather can have a huge part to play in numbers of cyclists - if it's raining very few cyclists will appear and car numbers will be up. So one count per year is not ideal.
We are suggsting to carry out a 'Cyclist Count' in the spring to reflect cyclist numbers more accurately. The area chosen is roughly the city centre island.
But we need people! We reckon we would need about 15 to 20 people. Each person would be required to count the number of cyclists crossing a particular bridge from about 7.30 am to 9.30am. This doesn't suit some people so we'd have to relieve them with others.
Can we have a show of hands by replying to me at corkcyclingcampaign@yahoo.ie (to avoid overloading everyone's mailbox) for all those interested in taking part. You don't HAVE to be part of the email group to take part - all welcome!
The idea is to repeat the exercise each year over several years to give an idea of the trends.
We could even have a traffic count breakfast beforehand!
