Nutricia 150th Member

SMILE Welcomes Nutricia Infant Nutrition

as our 150th member: This week SMILE Resource Exchange was delighted to welcome Nutricia Infant Nutrition as its 150th business member in the Cork region.
Based in Macroom, Nutricia Infant Nutrition forms the Medical Division of the Danone group, manufacturing specialised infant and toddler milks.
Currently the Macroom manufacturing facility is undergoing a €50 million expansion which will see the creation of 40 permanent jobs as well as 200 construction jobs whilst the development is taking place.
On completion, the facility will be the largest and most technologically advanced manufacturing centre in Danone Baby Nutrition's Global network.

The expansion will result in a trebling of capacity and 98% of the output from Macroom will be exported and commercialised in more than 60 countries worldwide.
Donal Dennehy, General Manager of the manufacturing facility in Macroom said "we are delighted to be the 150th member of such an innovative initiative and we look forward to working with the SMILE team in identifying opportunities ahead." Read More...

Nick Barker: a SMILE member that has attended our exchange events in the past discusses his production company Upcycle and what kinds of waste he is using to create great new products.
Q: What is Upcycle?
A: UpCycle is an Irish Design / manufacturer of eco friendly products.
Q: You have created a skipping rope from a water bottle?
A: Yes, it is made from the waste created during the lifecycle of a plastic water bottle. The handle is made from bottles that are considered waste due to fault. The rope is made from recycled plastic drink bottles and the connection between the rope and the handle is a reused bottle cap.
Q: What is one of your most successful products and what did you use to make it?
A: The JarLamp; They are made from re-using glass jars, a hole is drilled in the cap and a lamp fitting is offered through.
Q: What interesting product are you devising now at the moment?
A: The Stool & Shelf; This is a system of up-cycling functional furniture from commercial waste material. The Stool & Shelf steel piped structure is made from recycling scrap metal from the car scrap yard. The plastic surfaces are off cuts that are currently considered waste. I re-use this waste as the material for Stool & Shelf's surfaces.

Connect Meeting Macroom-E

We CONNECT

with business at Macroom-E : At this month's CONNECT Business Network meeting in Macroom-E Enterprise Centre Michelle Green made a presentation to the large group of business in attendance. The CONNECT meetings are all about businesses in the area getting together to make contacts, share ideas, opportunities and solutions to challenges and so this was a great opportunity to showcase the benefits SMILE can have for business. The next meeting is Wednesday 7th of September.
Soap

Resource of the Month

SOAP: The re-use of soap can have enormous benefits both to the environment and to a businesses bottom line. With thousands of hotel rooms in Ireland, huge numbers of soap bars are discarded every day. With this in mind there is huge potential for hoteliers to divert tonnes of waste from landfill. One example is a charity in the US that collects used soap from hotels, melts it and reshapes it to form new bars that are then sent to developing countries in an effort to raise awareness of sanatation standards. Have you any uses for the Resource of the Month?
Another Successful Exchange

Another Exchange Materialised!!

Cork City Enterprise Board: had 8 large pieces of material that they uploaded as a resource on our website. The material would have otherwise went to landfill but the Cheeky Cherubs, an early years school in Cork City, saw their chance for creativity and have made a successful exchange. The staff at the school said that they will be able to use the material for arts & crafts and for sensory exploration of the different types of material with the children. Cork City Enterprise board have also benefited by saving on the cost of disposal.
