What do people do, when the law prevents them from protecting
themselves? That's the question at the heart of "The Pipe," a
stirring, character-rich Irish documentary showing at the Cork film
festival on Monday 8th of November.
Fresh back from a successful showing to 3 packed houses at the 2010
Toronto International Film festival, Variety Magazine classed 'The
Pipe' as a "first-rate documentary, beautifully composed and valiantly
photographed, a charismatic David-Goliath tale." CBS Canada featured
the documentary on its prime time current affairs programing where the
the documentary's subject matter was used to stimulate national debate
in Canada on community involvement on energy infrastructure projects.
At its heart it uses the dramatic scenery of North West Mayo as a
setting for an epic drama - following the experiences of smallholders
and subsistence fishermen who are pitted against the considerable
resources of not only the worlds most powerful oil companies. When the
government fails to acknowledge the valid concerns of the inhabitants
of the pipeline route, members of the community choose conflicting
courses of action, with devastating consequence for a close knit
village, often putting them in direct conflict with neighbours.
Tensions become frayed as pressure is applied when the state uses its
muscle to force the pipeline through. As the community heads down a
route of self destruction under sustained pressure, a few stubborn
individuals from widely different backgrounds, emerge to take the
fight back to a powerfull Oil giant and a complicit state. This, is
their story.
