rx3 Trash to Cash student competition launch October 2010

TURNING "TRASH TO CASH" STUDENT COMPETITION

rx3, "rethink, recycle, remake" are delighted to announce the Trash to Cash competition for a second year running.

The focus is to rethink how "waste" can be recycled to make new products.

"A lot of people don't know that their egg boxes for example are made from newspaper..(in fact it it takes 1 newspaper to make 4 egg boxes!) and that fleeces can be made from plastic bottles ( it takes 27 PET bottles to make one fleece!)" according to Olivier Gaillot, rx3 Project Manager "We are exporting nearly 80% of our non hazardous waste material which is being then turned into items like fleeces. The question to ask is why send this abroad when we could find markets for this material here and develop new Irish indigenous products" according to Gaillot.

This competition therefore aims to highlight that there are lots of opportunities working with waste materials and hopes to start changing the Irish mindset around waste. "We need to see waste a positive resource and harness the value which is in waste", says Gaillot.

As well as receiving a monetary prize, a number of ideas will be shortlisted to exhibit at an awards ceremony in the Science Gallery to be held in early April 2011.
