To read the full articles just click on the links. | There was a heavy swell last Monday night (4th Aug) and by the morning of the 5th people walking on the strands of Port Mor, Faulmore, along by the pier at Blacksod, and indeed all along the lower end of the Mullet peninsula were finding stranded seal pups, some as young as three or four days old, washed in off the breeding grounds on the adjacent islands. |
Yesterday in Waterford Circuit Court ( DPP v Tate) ,in a ground-breaking and historic judgement for seals in Ireland, the Judge upheld the earlier proseceution from the District Court on Appeal, in the case of a fisherman shooting a seal in Dunmore E. Harbour in the middle of the day amid onlookers and tourists, the seal then taking 2 hours to die before an expert marksman could be got to end his suffering. |
One year on from new Programme for Government and still no Climate Bill. "How long do the Greens put up with the foot-dragging before walking?" Friends of the Earth has called on the Government to confirm when the long-delayed Climate Bill will be published. The call comes one year to the week after the renewed Programme for Government contained a commitment to introduce climate change legislation. This was presented at the time as a significant achievement for the Green Party in Government. Despite a Government announcement that the Bill would be passed in 2010, deadline after deadline has since been missed. And a Cabinet Committee meeting called for yesterday to discuss the draft bill was cancelled without explanation. |
The Centre for Environmental Living and Training (CELT) held their autumn 'Weekend in the Woods' skills training event over the weekend of 2nd / 3rd October. This was the 22nd such event and again proved a great success with more than 80 participants from all around the country. They were able to avail of the expertise of professional tutors to learn a skill over the two days. Skills included Coppersmithing, Herb lore, Basketry, Natural Building, Wood Carving, Blacksmithing, Spinning and Weaving, Stone Carving, Greenwood Furniture, Súgán Chair making, Silversmithing, Felt making and, for the youngsters, Woodcrafts and Rustic Art.

Stop Climate Chaos coalition asks where is the promised Bill and where's the promised climate finance A cross-party majority of TDs have now declared their support for a strong climate change law in Ireland and new finance to help developing countries cope with climate change, according to the Stop Climate Chaos coalition. 84 TDs have now signed the "Climate Commitment" launched by the coalition of environment, development, faith and youth groups earlier this year. Stop Climate Chaos made the announcement the day after a Cabinet Committee meeting called to discuss climate change was cancelled without explanation. |

There is no doubt that EU initiatives have generated greater awareness of environmental issues and have led to increased levels of environmental protection. At the same time, however, implementation and enforcement of EU obligations continue to pose major challenges for Member States. This one-day training examines recent developments in Education for Sustainable Development (ESD). Participants will learn how to develop a peer education approach centred on the principles of sustainability and leadership.
This one-day training explores an alternative approach to drug misuse prevention using environmental education as a resource for positive personal development of young people.
