Much rotted and nothing wasted, the cycle of life and decay was everywhere to be seen, not just in a compost bin"..
Learn more about this topic from Roisin Hurley, and Dr. Darrell McAdam O'Connell

New Water Technology Textbook Published
The latest edition of the textbook Water Technology: An introduction for Environmental Scientists and Engineers (740pp) written by Professor Nick Gray of the Centre for the Environment in the School of Natural Sciences has been released today. Co-published by Butterworth-Heinemann and IWA Publishing the new third edition has been extensively updated and expanded, and is supported by a dedicated website and blog: www.irelandswater.com. The book is also available on-line.
Water science and technology is one of the world's largest and most interdisciplinary industries employing a wide range of scientists and engineers, as well as computer specialists and a range of different management professionals. The text provides a complete introduction to all aspects of managing the hydrological cycle and is specifically aimed at those interested in a career in the water industry. This popular textbook has been adopted as a course text in universities all over the world. This is the third book written by Prof. Gray in recent years the others being Drinking Water Quality: Problems and Solutions (Cambridge University Press: 2008) and Biology of Wastewater Treatment (Imperial College Press: 2005).
Survey -- National Sustainable Development Strategy
The McGill-UNEP Collaborating Centre on Environmental Assessment would like to invite you to take part in a survey to share your perspective on Ireland's National Sustainable Development Strategy, "Sustainable Development: A Strategy for Ireland" (1997) and its associated documentation.
This is a completely anonymous, web-based survey and it can be accessed at: http://www.zoomerang.com/Survey/WEB22AZDKL7C66
It should take no longer than 15 minutes to complete. The results from this survey will contribute to an evaluation of the national and/or provincial/state Sustainable Development Strategies of government in five nations: Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom.
This research involves a comparative analysis of each country's strategy (and associated documentation), as well as a survey of environmental consultants and practitioners in each jurisdiction. The purpose of this survey is to add a third-party perspective to the analysis, offering a measure of control against the potential bias in government self-reporting.
We hope you will take this opportunity to have a say in evaluating the sustainable development strategy of your government. All participants are eligible to receive a free summary of the research findings and will be automatically entered in the random drawing of a $100 gift certificate from Amazon.com.
We would also ask that you please circulate this invitation to the firms and individual consultants associated with your organization if you think they would be interested in contributing to our study.
Sincerely,
Gordon Hickey

Cork Attraction is first accredited ECO centre in Ireland

Cork Attraction is first accredited ECO centre in Ireland
Lifetime Lab at the Old Cork Waterworks has become the first tourist attraction in Ireland to receive the internationally recognised ECO centre accreditation from An Taisce. Lord Mayor Cllr. Michael O Connell accepted the award on behalf of the popular visitor centre operated by Cork City Council on Lee Road.
The centre which is open to the public is set in the beautifully restored Victorian waterworks buildings dating back to Victorian times, promotes sustainable living as well as providing science and environmental education for primary schools. The Standard was achieved by introducing environmental management systems across day to day operations, for example the monitoring of energy allowed Lifetime Lab to reduce its electricity consumption by 36%, similar savings were made across water and waste.
Manager Mervyn Horgan commented "that added to the important environmental benefits of participating, ECO centres has also brought added business benefits, most notably in reducing our operating costs, which is high on the agenda of many businesses at the moment .The case for introducing an environmental management system is clearly evident and I would encourage other centres in Cork to participate".
Lifetime Lab is located in the old Cork City Waterworks on the Lee Road. Open to the public the restored Victorian complex contains a Visitor Centre with interactive exhibits, a steam centre with the original boilers and huge steam engines once used to supply water to the City of Cork, a schools centre, coffee dock, picnic area, children's playground and is fully wheelchair accessible.
For further information, please contact the Lifetime Lab at: 021-4941500 or view the website www.lifetimelab.ie

Appeal for your Summer Bird Sightings
BirdWatch Ireland is appealing to people across Ireland to send in their summer bird sightings to help with a landmark project, The Bird Atlas 2007-11.
Every sighting you send in from a Robin nesting in your garden shed to a Cuckoo calling on your local bog will really help to fill in the gaps on the species maps to ensure that your local area is well covered for the Atlas.
We are appealing for records of all bird species common and rare alike, but in particular records of declining or more difficult to find species such as Cuckoo, Spotted Flycatcher, Jay, warblers, waders, Golden Plover, Nightjar, Yellowhammer, Red Grouse, Treecreeper, Quail, Kingfisher, Woodcock, Chough, breeding seabirds, breeding duck and all birds of prey will be particularly useful.
In addition to the bird record any breeding information or 'breeding evidence' as it's known, will greatly enhance the value of the record. The type of evidence would include a singing male, a pair of birds, a nest with eggs, or recently fledged young. A full list of the breeding evidence codes is available from www.birdatlas.net or contact Brian for the list.
There are several easy ways to submit your records:
Enter them online to the Atlas website as Roving Records (www.birdatlas.net)
Enter them on a paper Roving Records form (download from www.birdatlas.net or contact Brian)
Send them in an e-mail (e-mail below)
Write a letter with your sightings and detailed locations (address below)
Brian Caffrey, The Irish Atlas Coordinator said "Thanks to the tremendous efforts of a dedicated band of Atlas volunteers across Ireland we are now well on our way to producing a fantastic Atlas that we can all be proud of. Now is your chance to play your part by sending in your bird sightings from this summer".
