The best way to solve the climate crisis? 350.org update

Dear friends,

A friend recently asked me: "What's the single best way to solve the climate crisis?"

The question made me stop and think. I've been getting so many amazing updates about the climate solutions people are working on for the 10/10/10 Global Work Party, it's nearly impossible to pick just one.

The truth is, there is no silver bullet to stopping the climate crisis, no single technological solution that can fix everything at once.  We don't just need solar power, or wind power, or efficiency. We need all of these things and more.  What we need, in a word, is diversity.

I feel the same way about building the climate movement. We can't rely on just one campaign, one event, one organization, one country, or one strategy-to build a powerful climate movement we need a bit of everything.

This is why we have such a diverse campaign plan-and such a broad alliance--at 350.org. For those of you wondering what we've been up to and how all the pieces fit together, here's a quick round-up of the latest news from our various campaigns:

10/10/10-and Grants to Support Local Climate Action!
You probably already know all about our plans for 10/10/10, "The Global Work Party."  (If not, check out the invitation here)  It's less than 3 months away, and people's plans are really starting to take shape:  teams insulating schools in London,  a bike-caravan of lighting retrofitters in Mombasa, and hundreds and hundreds more.  With events in 116 countries and counting, it will be massive.

One new development here: we now have a small pool of MONEY to support your local climate solutions projects for 10/10/10.  Submit your 10/10/10 plan by August 7th, get enough people to vote on it, and you could receive a grant of $1,000 USD to make it happen.  Check out www.350.org/funds to learn more

The Great Power Race: NEW VIDEO
Next up is the The Great Power Race, a clean energy competition between students in India, China, and the United States.  Starting this September, students will get to work making their campuses models of sustainability and spur our nations to create whole new industries-and win great prizes while doing so. The race doesn't officially start for more than a month, but the registration drive is underway. India already has over 200 campuses signed up.  Can China and the USA keep up?  As the young founders of the Great Power Race are saying:

"Our parents raced for the Moon. Our generation will race for the Earth."

We also have brand new video to get people fired up about the Great Power Race--check it out: www.greatpowerrace.org/video

Put Solar On It!
Just two weeks ago we launched the "Put Solar On It" campaign, and it's making big waves from Washington DC to Delhi.  We're calling for world leaders to go solar on 10/10/10-and to couple this symbolic effort with a real commitment to pass policies that can unleash the clean energy economy we need.  We've partnered with Sungevity, a solar provider who has agreed to donate the panels to any world leader who will go solar on 10/10/10. President Nasheed from the Maldives has already committed to going solar on that day-will other leaders follow suit?  Only if we build our numbers, so get all your friends to sign on today: www.PutSolarOn.It

US Campaigning
It's nearly impossible to make global progress on climate change without getting the US to act, which is why we've been working hard to kickstart climate action in Washington DC and beyond.  We've turned up the heat on Senators to make sure they didn't settle for a weak and watered-down climate and energy bill and we helped organize hundreds of rallies against offshore drilling

***THIS JUST IN***
Senate democrats have decided that definitely there will not be a climate portion of a bill in the coming weeks. This is bad news--and further evidence that we have to keep working on the ground to shift the political climate as fast as humanly possible.

There's lots more brewing at 350.org, but that gives you a good overview. If you've read this far, thank you.

Looking over the list of campaigns above, it becomes clear: there actually is one silver bullet to solving the climate crisis, and it's not solar power.  It's people power.

We can't do this without you. Let's keep building this movement.

Onwards,

Kelly and the 350.org team

350.org is an international grassroots campaign that aims to mobilize a global climate movement united by a common call to action. By spreading an understanding of the science and a shared vision for a fair policy, we will ensure that the world creates bold and equitable solutions to the climate crisis. 350.org is an independent and not-for-profit project.

What is 350? 350 is the number that leading scientists say is the safe upper limit for carbon dioxide in our atmosphere. Scientists measure carbon dioxide in "parts per million" (ppm), so 350ppm is the number humanity needs to get below as soon as possible to avoid runaway climate change. To get there, we need a different kind of PPM-a "people powered movement" that is made of of people like you in every corner of the planet.

Publicity Officer needed - Bantry House Country Courses

Bantry House Country Courses (www.bantryhousecountrycourses.com) needs some help! - We're so busy setting up courses and working on the infra-structure that we don't get round to the publicity side of things...

The project is about rebuilding the mixed farm at Bantry House and showing people how all the different parts fit together to create community, good food, healthy environment, jobs, etc. And the courses allow people to come and have a brilliant day learning the different skills involved. This is not going to happen over-night obviously, but already the courses are getting great feed-back ("this was a truely wonderful course.." "loved it!").

Anyway, if anyone out there wants to help out, make a paid job for themselves, whatever, we'd love to hear from them. There's huge potential, too, for commercial growers of herbs, vegetables, grains, fruits, livestock of all sorts - and you'd be part of a really exciting project..

350.org Launches 10/10/10 Global Work Party

Organizers of "most widespread day of political action in history" Push for Action in 2010

BONN – At the UN Climate Talks in Bonn, Germany this week, the international campaign 350.org announced plans for a Global Work Party scheduled for this 10 October 2010. All over the world, thousands of communities will be putting up solar panels, insulating homes, organizing bicycle parades and getting to work on the many solutions to the climate crisis.

"Our message is: if we can get to work, so can our lawmakers," said 350.org founder and environmental author, Bill McKibben. "If we can climb up on the roof of a school and hammer in a solar panel, our negotiators can climb up to the podium here at the UN Climate Talks and commit to a real deal."

In 2009, 350.org organized an International Day of Action with over 5,200 events in more than 180 countries to support the goal of reducing C02 from its current level of 390 parts per million to below 350 ppm, the safe upper limit according to the latest science. CNN called the events, "the most widespread day of political action in history." In Copenhagen, 112 countries endorsed the 350 ppm C02 target and continue to support it at the talks here in Bonn.

"Two years ago, nobody had ever heard of 350. By coming together around the world, everyday citizens made it the most important number on the planet," said McKibben. "Now, we're looking to get an even simpler message across to our politicians: get to work."

Along with the Global Work Party, 350.org is coordinating the Great Power Race, a clean energy competition between students in China, India, and the United States. "Youth across India are already working on solutions to the climate crisis. The Great Power Race will be an opportunity for us to highlight and build on their efforts," says Roselin Dey with 350.org India.

Over 1,000 events are already registered on the 350.org website for the 10/10/10 Global Work Party. "Our goal is to provide a platform for the millions of voices of everyday citizens who are left out of the international climate negotiations," said Jamie Henn, 350.org Communications Director. "The 10/10/10 Global Work Party will provide compelling stories of people in nearly every country who are getting to work on climate solutions and asking their leaders to do the same."

Coastwatch has congratulated John Gormley for helping to protect Ireland's wetlands by ensuring that a key symbolic amendment is included in the Planning and Development Bill. This amendment will make it illegal for the Minister of Agriculture to reclaim land without planning permission.

THE LOBBY group Friends of the Irish Environment (FIE) has written to President Mary McAleese urging her to convene the Council of State with a view to referring the planning Act to the Supreme Court to test its constitutionality.

A last-minute amendment to the Planning and Development (Amendment) Act means members of the public "will find it impossible to obtain legal representation if their costs will not be met, even when they win against the State", it warned.

The Financial Crisis, Peak Oil and You: Building Resilience From the Bottom Up

Press Release – for immediate release – 19th July 2010

Transition Cork City – The Resilient Rebels

The Financial Crisis, Peak Oil and You:  Building Resilience From the Bottom Up

A unique chance to hear a global perspective on current Money and Energy challenges, and how Cork communities can gear up locally for power-down.

Date:  Sunday 1st August 2010

Time:  7:30 pm

Location:  The Pegasus Room, Clarion Hotel, Lapp's Quay, Cork

Entrance:  €5 (free for unwaged)

The world renowned blogger Stoneleigh (aka Nicole Foss) of The Automatic Earth (http://theautomaticearth.blogspot.com/) is currently touring Europe and will be speaking in Cork on Sunday August 1st, at 7:30 pm in the Clarion Hotel.  She is an energy industry consultant, a financial analyst and former editor of the Oil Drum Canada.

Stoneleigh, and her co-blogger Illargi, were some of very few analysts globally who foresaw such things as the collapse of Lehmann Brothers and the Icelandic banks, so her insights into what is really happening in the financial world are definitely worth hearing.  Her talks present very clearly the stark challenges which lie ahead, and she has made a huge impression wherever she has spoken.  For anyone who wants to find out what is coming down the line, this talk by Stoneleigh is a must.

Stoneleigh's Cork talk is the first of three such talks in Ireland, as part of her current European tour.  She is also speaking in Castlebar, Co. Mayo at the Linenhall Theatre on Monday 2nd August, and at the Greenhouse in Dublin on Tuesday 3rd August.

Stoneleigh is being hosted in Cork by Transition Cork City – The Resilient Rebels, the local initiative of the global Transition movement.  The Transition movement explores how communities can come together and respond to the challenges, and opportunities, of Peak Oil, Climate Change, and increasingly, economic stagnation.  Transition Cork City was formed earlier this year by a group of individuals interested in coming together to find a collective community response to the challenges facing the city, and to help build local resilience.
