Cork County Council is now inviting applications for the 2010 Conservation Grant Scheme subject to receipt of funding from the Department of Environment, Heritage and Local Government, for grants for the conservation of protected structures.
Cork County is host to a rich variety of buildings and structures of architectural, historical, archaeological, artistic, cultural, scientific, social and/or technical importance. From the modest thatch house, to the vast country demesnes, from the expansive military fortifications and ecclesiastical centres to our industrial urban centres all of which are physical expressions of the county's rich and unique historic environment.
Cork County Council is aware of the significant importance of historic buildings and structures to the county's heritage. The principle mechanism for protecting historic buildings and structures is through the inclusion to the Record of Protected Structures. This provides a positive recognition of the building's or structures importance and merit.
Cork County Council, with funding provided by the Department of Environment, Heritage and Local Government, runs an annual conservation grant scheme to assist in the ongoing conservation of protected structures. In 2009, Cork County Council awarded funding to a total of thirty-nine applicants to assist in the carrying out of conservation works to protected structures. Examples of works funded under the Conservation Grant Scheme, include thatching, roof repairs, conservation of historic joinery and ironwork, historic window repairs and lime plastering.
