IRCSET Postdoctoral Fellowships Call - opportunity for members

 

Since 2002, the Irish Research Council for Science, Engineering and Technology (IRCSET) has run an annual Call for Postdoctoral Fellowships, awarding fellowships to talented early-stage researchers from all over the world (http://www.ircset.ie/tabid/64/default.aspx).  These prestigious EMPOWER fellowships are targeted at high-calibre early-career researchers (no more than 3 years post PhD), and the competition is open to any researcher worldwide who meets this criterion.

 

The next call is due to open on the 26^th of October 2011, and we wish to attract a significant number of applications from suitably-qualified candidates.  We would like to ask your help in ensuring that the best and brightest early-career researchers in your community are aware of this opportunity, by forwarding this email to the members of the Environmental Sciences Association of Ireland.  We are particularly interested in soliciting applications from talented female researchers, who, although always under-represented in the number of applications received during our postdoctoral calls, consistently outperform the male applicants in terms of success rate.  Approximately 20 of these highly sought-after fellowships will be awarded via this year's Call.

Ecologist position at Fehily Timoney & Company

 

Fehily Timoney & Company currently have an opening for a  Senior Ecologist in our Cork office.  This is a contract role and requires the following attributes from the ideal candidate;

 

Key Responsibilities:

 

•          Senior Ecologist (birds specialist preferable) within Ecology Team, responsible for managing resources, budgets and dealing with clients,

•          Field surveys e.g. conducting baseline ecological assessments, habitat surveys, bird surveys etc.

•          Data handling and technical report writing and use of standard software packages such as Microsoft Office,

•          A comprehensive knowledge of the relevant environmental legislation and use of the main desktop sources of ecological data,

 

Skills / Qualifications / Capabilities:

 

•          Holds an Honours degree in Ecology, Zoology, Botany or equivalent qualification.

•          Ideally has some professional experience in an ecological consultancy.

•          Specialist birds knowledge -field and/or technical skills key to role.

•          Excellent communication, organisational and analytical skills required.

•          Key requirements include efficient work methods, functioning both as part of team and on own initiative.

•          Full clean Drivers Licence.

•          Travel and overnight work is a requirement of the job.

Launch of Field Ecology Certificate and Diploma

UCC are now inviting applications for the Field Ecology Certificate and Diploma Distance Learning Course.

 

The course will run over 2 years, and there is an option to complete year one and graduate with a Certificate in Field Ecology. Completion of Year 2 will result in a Diploma in Field Ecology. There will be 3 weekend classes during each year and a 2-week summer field course. The method of assessment is a mixture of continuous assessment and exams.

 

The course fee is €1,150 per year. Application forms can be downloaded at www.ucc.ie/en/study/ace/how/ . Closing date for applications is December 2nd 2011.

Ireland Involved Awards Launch Tomorrow

Now in their fourth year, the Ireland Involved Awards aim to highlight and celebrate wonderful volunteers around Ireland on a national stage. This year, the ceremony will take place on the International Day of the Volunteer, 5^th December at St. Georges Hall in Dublin Castle. Claire Byrne has kindly offered to host the awards again this year, and will be part of the launch tomorrow with Clodagh McKenna, Laura Woods and Dublin GAA Player Philly McMahon.

Despite their dire status, the over-fishing of these stocks continues. The IWT is actively campaigning for sustainable fisheries and healthy marine ecosystems on both a national and European scale. My name is Dana Miller, the IWTs new fisheries programme coordinator and I have been working on behalf of the IWT on a number of marine conservation issues including our participation within the European coalition OCEAN2012. Our fantastic IWT volunteers have been busy all year completing the IWT National Newt Survey in ponds and pool across Ireland. This volunteer-based survey was carried out this year by 170 IWT volunteers, who received training at 9 training hubs across the country in counties Cork, Dublin, Galway, Kerry, Longford, Monaghan/Cavan, Tipperary, Sligo, and Waterford.   The results of the survey will be used to find out where in Ireland these native amphibians live and what habitats they need to survive within our landscape.
