2 new MSc courses at NUIG

 

Two novel MSc courses starting in NUIG this September have been devised to meet the needs of people interested in environmental careers.

1. MSc in Sustainable Resource Management:Policy & Practice
A full time MSc in Sustainable Resource Management:Policy and Practice is a multidiscplinary approach to environmental sustainability run by NUI Galway and University of Limerick based on the specialisms of both colleges. Students spend Semester 1 in NUIG learning about landscape and conservation management and are based in UL for Semester 2 where they learn about urban sustainability. Students spend Semester 3 undertaking a research project, based at either institution. Assessment is ongoing and there are no exams.

Students can avail of facilities from both colleges throughout the year and will graduate with a jointly awarded degree.

Entry requirements: At least a 2nd Class honours in a relevant subject (Environmental Sciences/Economics/Engineering or Geography/Ecology or Biological Sciences.) Mature students with relevant experience are most welcome to apply.

2. MSc in Biodiversity and Land Use Planning
A two year part time distance learning MSc in Biodiversity and Land Use Planning seeks to integrate biodiversity within land use policy. It is particularly relevant for Local Authority staff but would be applicable to consultants as well.

This is a distance learning course with attendance at lectures and fieldtrips every 5 weeks at NUI Galway. As well as ongoing assessment, there are written exams at the end of each semester.

Entry requirements: Level 8 primary degree in an appropriate discipline. Mature students with relevant experience are most welcome to apply.

Volunteer Ireland has arrived

Volunteer Ireland has arrived!

Volunteer Centres Ireland and Volunteering Ireland have now merged to create Volunteer Ireland, a single national volunteering organisation for Ireland. The services and supports for volunteering previously offered by two organisations will now be delivered by one: from the Ireland InVOLved Awards to the National Day of Volunteering.

The creation of Volunteer Ireland is great news for volunteering in Ireland. Combining the skills, strengths and talents of VCI and VI into a single national volunteering organisation will mean we can build on the considerable achievements of our two organisations to date and increase the services and supports for volunteering in Ireland. As a bigger, better and unified organisation for volunteering, Volunteer Ireland will be far better placed to respond to the needs of volunteering in Ireland. 2011 is European Year of Volunteering and Volunteer Ireland will be a fantastic legacy of it for Ireland.

The focus of Volunteer Ireland will be to create an enabling environment for volunteering, to develop an ethos of volunteerism across all sectors of society and to be an independent and legitimate voice for volunteering. Working with our local Volunteer Centres, volunteer-involving organisations and volunteers, Volunteer Ireland will be a powerful advocate for volunteering in Ireland.

As of from last week, all staff and volunteers in Volunteer Centres Ireland and Volunteering Ireland transferred to Volunteer Ireland and we are all looking forward to working together to create a single, great volunteering organisation for Ireland. For the moment, of course, it's 'business as usual'. However, we look forward to developing our new organisation over the coming months and to sharing our progress with you.

TUS Placement in Community & Voluntary Organisations

This initiative will be of interest to Community & Voluntary Groups.    The Tús initiative is a community work placement scheme providing a short-term (12 months) working opportunities for unemployed people. All work carried out by participants in the Tús scheme must benefit the community.    The types of project eligible for the scheme may include: ·        Energy conservation (work in homes and community buildings) ·        Social care of all age groups and people with disabilities ·        Caretaking, securing, supervising of community buildings and spaces ·        Renovation of community and sporting facilities, including the regeneration and enhancement of community, recreation and sporting spaces ·        Work in support of cultural and heritage activities ·        Community administration and community event management ·        Coaching for sporting activities ·        Repair of equipment for the Third World – for example, farm tools, bicycles, computers, sewing machines, health equipment   Unemployed people who are eligible for the scheme will be identified and contacted by their local social welfare office (self- referral for the scheme is not possible) and offered the opportunity to participate in the scheme. If they agree to participate in the Tús scheme, they will be referred to West Cork Development Partnership,  where they will be recruited for a suitable placement when it becomes available.    We are currently seeking Community and voluntary organisations who would be interested in providing a Tús work placement(s) opportunity. Cork attraction wins best Industrail Museum/Site Award

Cork Attraction wins Best Industrial Museum/Site Award

 

Lifetime Lab at the Old Cork Waterworks has been selected as "Best Industrial Museum/Site" by the Industrial Heritage Association of Ireland. The accolade was presented to Lifetime Lab at a special ceremony at ESB headquarters recently.

The awards now in their sixth year recognise individuals and organisations that have contributed to the preservation and promotion of Ireland's industrial heritage. Over the past decade there has been a growing public awareness of Ireland's industrial heritage, as seen in a number of sites which have been restored and now open to the public as tourist and educational attractions.

Lifetime Lab was selected by the Industrial Heritage Association of Ireland (IHAI) for the successful integration of Victorian architecture, including three enormous stationary steam engines, with the modern requirements of a 21^st century visitor experience.  Manager of Lifetime Lab Mervyn Horgan commented "Recognition by the IHAI is a fantastic achievement; each year we try to expand the heritage value of Lifetime Lab for our visitors, for example we have introduced an audio visual experience this year that recreates the working life of  a waterworks employee"

 

Speaking at the presentation, Colin Rynne, president of the IHAI Heritage said, "The judging committee identified Lifetime Lab as a clear winner for the award, the scale of the restoration and conservation are a credit to Cork City Council" He added "These awards are an opportunity to recognise the tremendous achievement in developing and sustaining industrial sites as tourist and educational amenities"

 

Lifetime Lab located at the old Cork City Waterworks on Lee Road, The Victorian buildings were restored to accommodate a visitor centre with interactive environmental exhibits, a steam centre with preserved boilers and huge steam engines and a schools science centre. Lifetime Lab also has a coffee dock, a picnic area, a children's playground, is fully wheelchair accessible and opens every day until 5.00pm

A plea for just a little support to make the Cork Cycling Festival happen!

Hello friends of the festival!

I do hope by now that one of our beautiful 2011 brochures has found its way to you - this year's festival is bigger than ever and as always 100% free.

Last week we set up a Fundit campaign to meet the costs of our biggest event, an outdoor fashion show, CycleChic which will take place on the Grand Parade from 10pm on Saturday 23rd. As part of it we really want to bring in the RE:CYCLE bike-powered cinema but we need your help. 

We are half-way through our campaign though and less than 10% towards our goal :-(  please help us make it happen! A contribution of a fiver would be a great help - but see the wonderful rewards we have available for different donations - wonderful cycling accessories, invites to a great party and more!
