2012 brings good news for this little bookshop and I am very pleased to announce that Walnut Books has found a new home. Liz O'Shea and Mollie Barrow, who have been running the Sheelagh na Gig bookshop in Cloughjordan for the past 5 years, have taken on walnutbooks.com and will be running it from their lovely shop next door to the ecovillage. They are well equipped to provide the kind of informed and tailored service customers of Walnut Books will be familiar with and, having started life at The Hollies, the new base in Cloughjordan feels like an excellent fit for Walnut Books.

2011 ESAI Photography competition winners

The theme of the 2011 ESAI Photography competition was "Nature in the Urban Environment". The competition was opened to all amateur photographers on the 1^st August 2011.

The winning photographer receives a framed copy of their photograph together with a €250 voucher for photographic equipment, kindly sponsored by the Environmental Research Institute at University College Cork.

Both runners up receive one year membership to the ESAI.

"Guzzler" escapes from Lifetime Lab

"GUZZLER" ESCAPES FROM LIFETIME LAB

Lifetime Lab is seeking help from primary school children all across Cork to keep an eye out for Guzzler, a furry energy eating alien that landed at the Old Waterworks recently. Guzzlers mission is to learn about saving energy from infant and junior classes and has been seen visiting Cork City schools this week.

The visit of Guzzler is part of a series of interactive, hands-on primary workshops available free to primary schools in Cork this year as Lifetime Lab partners the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) to increase the understanding of climate change and energy efficiency.

Guzzler workshops are available to junior (1^st & 2^nd) classes and children will learn about energy efficiency and environmental awareness through participation in various experiments and activities using Guzzler the puppet – the ultimate energy waster!

Speaking about the partnership Mervyn Horgan Manager of Lifetime Lab said "The partnership with SEAI is a complement to the success of our existing education programmes, with close to 8000 primary school children per year attending workshops at Lifetime Lab we have developed a strong working relationship with schools in Cork" He further said "pupils receiving the free workshops will be introduced to the concept of energy conservation and participate is fun activities at a level that is age appropriate, while class teachers will receive helpful resources linked to the SESE strands of science, geography and history".

Speaking about the workshops Aoife Cannon, Education Executive with SEAI said

"The aim of SEAI's Education Programme is to educate pupils on the benefits of sustainable energy, through local workshops we hope to reach a wider audience and really make a difference to the use of energy in Ireland". Aoife added "Lifetime Lab is an ideal partner to deliver the programme, both by the success in reaching a large audience but also as an exemplar of sustainability"

Tree planting at Ballinreeshig Nature Farm (please forward to all tree lovers)

Hi folks,

I am happy to announce, that this winter, we are planning to plant about 20 acres of mixed, mostly broadleaf, woodland on our community based organic/biodynamic farm near Ballygarvan, county Cork. 20 acres at recommended spacing translates to about 17,000 trees!

The species mix will be predominantly (85%) big trees, of inherently high value both ecologically and economically: Pedunculate Oak, Sweet Chesnut, Ash and Scots Pine.

The other 15% is to be planted later, amongst and around the big trees, with a mixture of native and exotic traditional fruit and nut bearing species on the sunny egdes (apples, plums, pears, hazels, walnuts, figs, mulberries...) as well as some more experimental forest garden vareties (eleagnus, sea buckthorn, oregon grape, arbutus... ) and some ecologically valuable native shrubs and small trees (hawthorn, blackthorn, hazel, broom, spindle, holly, birch...) to increase biodiversity and help keep the fairies happy.

We are going to commence planting the big trees (the 85%) on MONDAY 12 DECEMBER and we hope to have more or less all of them in by FRIDAY 23 DECEMBER. this means nearly 2 weeks of dedicated planting.

We are looking for as many VOLUNTEERS as possible to come up and get involved! If you are available to come up for a few hours, or a few days, please come and help plant up this haven of biodiversity, a sustainable source of fuel, food and fodder, and a demonstration site for ecologically sound forestry.

We will have a kettle on over the sheltered fireplace at the centre of the farm, and homemade soup for lunch.

Arrive any time from 9am, with sturdy footwear, waterproofs if it's a wet day, a decent spade (NOT a shovel) and maybe some bread, a sandwich or snack to help keep going!

Cork School Children to discuss European citizenship at Lifetime Lab

What is a global citizen, why is it important and should we stay with Europe? These are some of the questions that children from all over Cork city and county will put to Phil Prendergast MEP during an informal questions and answers as part of the An Taisce Global Citizen programme at Lifetime Lab on Monday 28^th November.

The programme is currently being developed to aid school children to gain a better insight to the workings of Europe and becoming a global citizen, as part of the programme schools are encouraged to learn about different nationalities in their school, look into purchasing habits, organising fund raising and to live more environmentally.

Being a European Citizen means we obey common laws and have common rights within the EU. Unlike in Roman times, being a citizen is not a status symbol anymore, as European Citizens we aspire to equal rights for all and we can all participate in the decision making process through our, democratically elected, Governments and MEP's. We are encouraged to be Active Citizens. The term Global Citizenship is not as easily defined as European Citizenship, there are no clear rules and regulations and, globally, we do not have democratically elected representatives to speak for us. Global Citizenship is more a moral understanding of our responsibilities and our rights in a global context. Being a true Global citizen indicates that we understand that all people have equal rights while at the same time valuing diversity. In addition, it means that we value the Earth as very precious, and as a resource upon which we all depend and should

Robert Boyle Science Festival

The Heritage Town of Lismore Co. Waterford plays host to the Robert Boyle
Science Festival from the 18th – 20th November 2011. Robert Boyle (1627 –
1691) was born in Lismore Castle and was perhaps the most influential scientist
of his day and the most respected of the founding members of the Royal Society
of London.

2011 represents the 350th anniversary of the publication of Robert Boyle's
famous scientific paper entitled, "The Skeptical Chymist". This document set
the scene for the establishment of the academic topic we now call the Chemical
Sciences. 2011 is also the year that has been designated the International Year
of Chemistry (or more simply, IYC) and so it is appropriate that Robert Boyle's
enormous contribution to the subject will be celebrated in a Science Festival to
be hosted at his birthplace in Lismore, Co. Waterford.

It is intended that this will be the first in an annual series of 'Robert Boyle Science
Festivals', no equivalent exists in Ireland currently. Educational activities of
the type that the Robert Boyle Science Festival will provide, that is connecting
schoolchildren to high level scientific policy makers and world renowned
scientists are exactly the type of national functions that will make science user
friendly both to adults and schoolchildren. The main objective of the festival is
therefore to promote science to a varied audience; children, students, academics
and the general public.

Talks by Professor Duncan Thorburn Burns (QUB) and Dr Allan Chapman (of
Channel 4 TV fame) will emphasise material on Boyle himself and also his
scientific partnership with the equally famous Robert Hooke.

Due to the universal importance of Boyle's law of gases, two further lectures
will be devoted to Earth's atmosphere. The first is to be presented by the Chief
Scientific Officer to DEFRA (Department for Environment, Food and Rural
Affairs) in the UK, Professor Bob Watson, and will provide a political perspective
relevant to human activities on air pollution, climate change and agriculture. Bob
is former chief scientist at the World Bank and prior to this he was White House
Associate Director for Environment Policy for the Clinton Administration.

The second lecture, by Professor Richard Wayne, renowned atmospheric

scientist from Oxford University, will attempt to put the evolution of our
atmosphere in proper perspective with our neighbouring planets in the Solar
System and answer the question: Why Life on Earth?

Armagh Planetarium will present their spectacular 'Stardome Portable
Planetarium' on Friday evening. Educational events specifically for schools
include the 'Robert Boyle Show' by Eoin Gill WIT, the Armagh Planetarium
and 'The Bubble Show' by The London Science Museum. Free events
on Sunday will be mounted by Dr Declan Kennedy (UCC), Calmast WIT
and Lifetime Lab suitable for both children and adults including lectures,
demonstrations and "hands-on" experiences.

The celebration ends with a spectacular Firework Display to point at the
essential "Air" that covers our planet and allows all forms of life to exist.

The Robert Boyle Science Festival is organised by the Lismore Heritage Centre
along with representatives from Lismore Castle, University College Cork,
Waterford Institute of Technology and local Chemical Industry. For further

UCC CampusBike has been established over the last one and a half years as a SmarterTravel demonstration project, part-funded by the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport.

Background:

University College Cork is committed to a Green Campus policy, and aspects of sustainability play an important role on more and more levels of the University's operations. UCC's efforts in this field have been recognised e.g. by being awarded the "Green Flag" by An Taisce (on behalf of the FEE – Foundation for Environmental Education) in 2010.

Sustainable travel is one important element of this strategy, and the promotion of cycling to and from the University is a major part in this.

Giving staff members easy access to a bicycle during the working day is the idea behind the UCC CampusBike scheme. A communal bicycle fleet is available in UCC for hourly use, for both work or private purposes. The basic concept is similar to well established public bike rental schemes in Ireland (e.g. DublinBikes) and abroad, but at a far smaller scale. The first fleet bicycles became operational in UCC in March this year.

As its official status as SmarterTravel demonstration project is finishing by the end of October, UCC (Buildings and Estates Office) is holding this dissemination seminar on UCC CampusBike, where we will inform about the concept, set-up and experiences with the scheme. An outlook will also be given on the scheme's transferability to other employers and the perspective of such rental schemes in general (please see draft programme below).

This seminar is addressed to transport policy makers / authorities, third level educational institutions and other large employers.

Biodiversity Keys: unlocking Ireland’s biodiversity

The vast majority of Ireland's 31,000 species belong to small, obscure groups of animals and plants such as fungi, algae and invertebrates. These groups are poorly understood as they are very difficult to study and identify to species level. Yet despite their complexity these organisms play a valuable role in the provision of goods and services to Irish society, services which are estimated to contribute at least €2.9 billion per annum to the Irish economy.

To understand and protect this valuable resource, new user-friendly, online identification keys on Ireland's biodiversity are required to increase our knowledge on these poorly studied aspects of Ireland's biodiversity.

The National Biodiversity Data Centre has developed specialised software, Biodiversity Keys, to meet this need. This software allows scientific experts to develop online keys for aiding the identification of animals and plants, specifically tailored to Irish science.

The first of these online keys is to Irish freshwater worms. Freshwater worms are an obscure group of animals that are sensitive to changes in water quality and are used in water quality assessments. The author of this identification key, Irish expert and environmental consultant, Pascal Sweeney, states 'that this is another very valuable service provided by the National Biodiversity Data Centre and one that will improve the understanding of highly specialised but important aspects of Ireland's biodiversity'.

We need help with our wildlife protection seminar that is organised for 12th November. We especially need people:
Living in the north east and north western sides of cork city to distribute posters for us.
Anyone going to Dublin in the next week or two who could collect some information for us from head office for the seminar.
Also please if you can volunteer an hour or two of your time on the 26th at St Johns College to help out with our stall then that would be appreciated. This is an event run by the animial care group. There will be lots to see on the day so worth a visit.

Cork's SMILE Resource Exchange Announces Expansion

into Kerry, Clare & Limerick

Minster for Environment, Community and Local Government, Phil Hogan, T.D. and Cork North West T.D., Aine Collins were "all smiles" as they joined representatives from SMILE Resource Exchange to announce the initiative's expansion from Cork into Limerick, Clare and Kerry.

SMILE (Saving Money through Industry Links and Exchanges) Resource Exchange is an initiative developed and piloted in Cork, to help create mutually beneficial partnerships between businesses. Established in 2010, SMILE Resource Exchange encourages the idea that "one person's waste is another's resource" and works with businesses and organisations to foster partnerships that allow them to exchange re-usable resources, and in doing so, save money, reduce waste going to landfill and to develop new business opportunities.

SMILE Resource Exchange is project managed by Macroom E, and is supported by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA); and Cork County and City Enterprise Boards; Cork County and City Councils; and now Limerick/Clare/Kerry Regional Waste Management Office; Limerick County and City Enterprise Boards; Kerry County Enterprise Board; and Clare County Enterprise Board.

Commenting at the announcement of the expansion of SMILE Resource Exchange, Cork North West T.D., Aine Collins said "I'm delighted to be here to celebrate the expansion of this project. Since its inception, SMILE Resource Exchange has identified over 1,000 potential matches between businesses, as well as identifying thousands of euros of cost savings for businesses in Cork. The expansion into Limerick, Clare and Kerry will drive this even further in the coming months and I'm delighted to lend my support to the project which is both environmentally and economically synergetic."

Sean O'Sullivan, CEO, South Cork Enterprise Board, which has supported SMILE Resource Exchange since the beginning, has seen the benefits to businesses in the region: "Cork was the flagship region for SMILE Resource Exchange and was such a massive success that we're now looking forward to progressing even further with the initiative which is based on the principle of building relationships through networking. In Cork, potential exchanges were identified through networking events, an online exchange facility and a support team to assist; and this principle will now be applied in Kerry, Limerick and Clare. Launch of Field Ecology Certificate and Diploma

UCC are now inviting applications for the Field Ecology Certificate and Diploma Distance Learning Course.

The course will run over 2 years, and there is an option to complete year one and graduate with a Certificate in Field Ecology. Completion of Year 2 will result in a Diploma in Field Ecology. There will be 3 weekend classes during each year and a 2-week summer field course. The method of assessment is a mixture of continuous assessment and exams.

IWT Sustainable Seas Campaign working to protect our oceans

At present, many fish stocks within Irish waters are depleted and some may possibly even be at risk of commercial extinction. Despite their dire status, the over-fishing of these stocks continues. The IWT is actively campaigning for sustainable fisheries and healthy marine ecosystems on both a national and European scale. My name is Dana Miller, the IWTs new fisheries programme coordinator and I have been working on behalf of the IWT on a number of marine conservation issues including our participation within the European coalition OCEAN2012. As an Irish member organisation to OCEAN2012, the IWT is participating in efforts to influence an environmentally responsible and effective reform of the policy which governs fishing activities within European waters, the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP). Newt News Flash!

Our fantastic IWT volunteers have been busy all year completing the IWT National Newt Survey in ponds and pool across Ireland. This volunteer-based survey was carried out this year by 170 IWT volunteers, who received training at 9 training hubs across the country in counties Cork, Dublin, Galway, Kerry, Longford, Monaghan/Cavan, Tipperary, Sligo, and Waterford.

The results of the survey will be used to find out where in Ireland these native amphibians live and what habitats they need to survive within our landscape. This will be done by producing a brand new distribution map for the species and by analysing their habitat use.

This course is for anyone interested in learning how to shorten their trousers, hem a skirt or just have fun doing up their old clothes! It is being held in Fota Wildlife Parks brand new Education Complex on Saturday the 22nd of October. The class runs from 10am to 4pm and costs €85. This includes lunch, refreshments and materials.

Energy Security and the Global Economy

Following up on our June seminar Energy Security and Competitiveness in a Rapidly Changing World, our next seminar expands on the recent warning from the IMF, published in their April 2011 World Economic Outlook, on the risks of oil scarcity to the global economy.

Access to affordable, reliable, and sustainable energy is a matter of national security, particularly so for a state such as Ireland, heavily dependent on increasingly expensive imported fossil fuels. Since the last seminar we have seen the unprecedented release by the International Energy Agency of their strategic oil reserve in an attempt to ease pressure on rising prices, further oil price volatility, and continuing economic stagnation in Europe and the US.

Dr. Michael Kumhof, a Deputy Chief at the International Monetary Fund will present his latest research on energy augmented macroeconomic models which formed the basis of Chapter 3 of the IMF's April World Economic Outlook, entitled 'Oil Scarcity, Growth, and Global Imbalances'. This work is a noteworthy departure from classical economic growth modeling methodologies. He will be joined by Dr. Robert Ayres (INSEAD) and Dr. Roger Bentley (UK ERC), whose respective work on the role of energy in economic growth and oil production forecasts, were referenced in the IMF study.

This seminar will highlight how

traditional models of economic growth exclude energy as a factor of production
present a new model incorporating energy as a factor of production (Ayres)
present an overview of a comprehensive study of future oil production forecasts and their attendant risks (Bentley)
an updated IMF model for economic growth incorporating oil and considering different future availability scenarios (Kumhof)

Dr. Michael KumhofDeputy Chief, Modeling Unit, Research Department, International Monetary Fund	Dr. Kumhof prepared the economic model and ran the oil supply scenarios published in Chapter 3 of the IMF's April 2011 World Economic Outlook.He will present his latest work on the impact of different future oil availability scenarios on economic growth.
Dr. Robert U. AyresProfessor Emeritus, INSEAD	Prof. Ayres is a co-author of The Economic Growth Engine: How Energy and Work Drive Material Prosperity and Crossing the Energy Divide: Moving from Fossil Fuel Dependence to a Clean-Energy Future. He has published ground-breaking research into the role of energy in determining economic growth, raising fundamental questions about our conventional models for economic prosperity.
Dr. Roger BentleyUniversity of Reading	Dr. Bentley is a leading expert in energy and oil production forecasts. He co-authored Global Oil Depletion (2009), a report commissioned by the UK Energy Research Council. He has studied the often controversial debate on oil production forecasts since the oil crises of the 1970's and attended the IEA's meeting in 1997 on oil reserves which formed the warning in their 1998 World Energy Outlook, a warning repeated in their 2008 WEO.

LIFETIME LAB PARTNER SEAI TO OFFER FREE PRIMARY SCHOOLS WORKSHOPS

A series of interactive,fun hands-on primary workshops will be available free to primary schools in Cork this year as Lifetime Lab partners the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) to increase the understanding of climate change and energy efficiency.

The workshops are available to both junior (1^st & 2nd ) and senior (3^rd- 6^th) classes with junior primary students learning about energy efficiency and environmental awareness through participation in various experiments and activities using Guzzler the puppet – the ultimate energy waster! The workshop for senior primary students focuses on fun experiments, including making a battery out of a lemon and creating energy with a balloon followed by the Energy Challenge Game, where students collect as many points as possible and try and avoid the dreaded Sin Bin!

Speaking about the partnership Mervyn Horgan Manager of Lifetime Lab said "The partnership with SEAI is a complement to the success of our existing education programmes, with close to 8000 primary school children per year attending workshops at Lifetime Lab we have developed a strong working relationship with schools in Cork" He further said "pupils attending the free workshops will also be see sustainability in practice, close to 80% of energy at Lifetime Lab is sourced onsite through solar, wind, geothermal and hydro systems".

Speaking about the workshops Aoife Cannon, Education Executive with SEAI said "The aim of SEAI's Education Programme is to educate pupils on the benefits of sustainable energy, through local workshops we hope to reach a wider audience and really make a difference to the use of energy in Ireland". Aoife added "Lifetime Lab is an ideal partner to deliver the programme, both by the success in reaching a large audience but also as an exemplar of sustainability"

Lifetime Lab is located at the Old Cork Waterworks on Lee Road. The site comprises of an interactive Visitor Centre and Steam Engine Room, Playground and Gardens, Modern Conference Room, School Resource Centre and Coffee Dock.

Lifetime Lab is an accredited Discover Primary Science & Maths (DPS&M) Centre and currently delivers workshops to over 8000 primary school children per year.

All programmes developed by SEAI are relevant to the various curricula, as set by the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment. For primary schools sustainable energy falls within the Social Environmental and Scientific Education (SESE) curriculum.

Free Social Media & Microsoft Workshop for Voluntary Organisations

If so, on Thursday morning from 11am to 3pm we are hosting a FREE workshop in Clonakilty on Social Media with Caroline Egan from The Carmichael Centre, and also Denis Condon from Microsoft.

Caroline will provide a practical hands-on approach for voluntary groups to using social media platforms like LinkedIn and Twitter, which will help to keep all people living in the community up to date on their activities.

The session will also highlight how voluntary groups can access technology through the Microsoft Donations Programme. Many non-profit / charity organisations are eligible to receive Microsoft software donations. Eligible charities can apply for up to 10 software titles, with 50 licences of each when they need them.

Future West Cork Week Launch - 10 October

As you may be aware, over the past 2 years West Cork Development Partnership has been involved in articulating a future vision for West Cork - Future West Cork.

To date, many hundreds of people have taken part in Future West Cork events in a dozen locations, from Adrigole to Kinsale. These workshops take a unique and innovative approach, and encourage people to think differently about how the life of their community and region will change over the coming years.

Communities big and small, business innovators, organisations and the people of West Cork - old and young are invited to come together to share their vision for the future. The purpose of this 'coming together' is to allow everyone to have a say in how our region can take collective action towards reaching a shared vision for West Cork.

From Monday October 10th to Friday October 14th is Future West Cork Week, where we are facilitating a number of community and business events throughout the region.

'Gaslands' Film Screening

Screening of Gasland on Friday the 14th of October at Christchurch,North main Street,Cork at 8pm. Admission is free.

The film "Gasland" documents the use of "Fracking" or Hydraulic Fracturing as a method of extracting previously unattainable natural gas from the ground and asks whether the method is safe for those living near the sites. It won the special jury prize for documentaries at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival, an Emmy for Outstanding Directing for Non-fiction Programming in 2011 and was nominated for an award at the 2011 Oscars.

This movie is being shown to highlight the International concern over this method of gas extraction and make people in the Munster region aware that this controversial process may be coming to a water table near them.
