Great response to Wanted: Apples!

(From Transition Cork City 'The Resilient Rebels')

Dear All

We have had a really strong response to the Wanted:Apples request made (see below press release).  The Evening Echo featured it last week and we are due to be featured on the 6 o'clock RTE news this evening!!  And we have been getting lots of phone calls with offers of apples and also pears.  So if you could help with any of the following it would be much appreciated - its good fun and you will get to sample the resulting produce whatever it may be!  Currently there are only 4 of us involved in picking etc - we hope not to have to turn away offers so could do with some help.

We need:

help picking fruit
help processing fruit
expertise on juice making - how to store it especially
glass/plastic containers to store juice in - lots of them!!
offers of help for other ways to use the fruit - jam/pies etc etc

We are using 'We Made This' South Pres, Evergreen Street as a base for storage and processing.  Get in touch if you would like to get involved.  Thanks!!

Postdoctoral Research Assistant – Wetland/Aquatic Ecology

Postdoctoral Research Assistant – Wetland/Aquatic Ecology

Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Assistant position at the Centre for Freshwater Studies, Dundalk Institute of Technology (DkIT). This study, led by DkIT, forms part of the £4 million INTERREG IVA funded

Tellus Border Project. The position is a two-year appointment, starting September 2011.

Position Summary:

The researcher will participate in a project that will:

Investigate the water delivery mechanisms and water requirements for a range of different types of wetlands in the border counties of Ireland, and

Describe and characterise the biological communities within these wetland systems.

Emphasis will be placed on developing an understanding of the relationships between hydrology, hydrogeology, water quality and ecology in order to examine the environmental supporting conditions required to maintain or enhance the ecosystem health. The project will commence with a compilation of wetland habitats in the Border counties. Selected wetlands will be chosen from the initial desk study for detailed site-specific research.

The project builds on the award-winning Tellus Project in Northern Ireland, which produced new environmental maps and digital data of soils, rocks and stream waters of the whole of Northern Ireland. Tellus Border and other spatial geoscientific data will be used to examine the influence of geological, geochemical, hydrological and hydrogeological factors on the location and development of wetland habitats.

Qualifications:

Candidates are required to have completed a Ph.D. in aquatic/wetland ecology, hydroecology or hydrology/hydrogeology and ideally have experience of characterising wetland/aquatic ecosystem processes. However, in exceptional cases candidates with an MSc and several years of relevant post-Masters experience may be considered. Applicants with field experience in water quality sampling/analysis, ecological mapping, the design and implementation of experimental methodologies, and field hydrogeology/hydrology will be given priority. Peer-reviewed publications already in print, in press or submitted will be looked on favourably. Excellent quantitative analytical skills, well-developed communication and cognitive skills, and a desire to work in a team-oriented environment are essential. Experience in working in a multi-disciplinary team and project management would be an advantage. Familiarity with geographic information systems (GIS) is desirable. Candidates should hold a valid driver's license.

The project is funded by the INTERREG IVA development programme of the European Regional Development Fund, which is managed by the Special EU Programmes Body (SEUPB). The project is a joint initiative between the Geological Survey of Ireland (GSI), the Geological Survey of Northern Ireland (GSNI), DkIT and Queen's University, Belfast (QUB).

Expected salary for this position is €37,750 (point 1 of the IUA scale). For further details please contact Dr Suzanne Linnane: suzanne.linnane@dkit.ie. Application forms may be accessed on the DkIT online erecruitment system. No other form of application will be accepted. Further information is available on the Institute website. Closing date for receipt of applications is Friday 9th September at 4pm.

Nutricia 150th Member

SMILE Welcomes Nutricia Infant Nutrition

as our 150th member: This week SMILE Resource Exchange was delighted to welcome Nutricia Infant Nutrition as its 150th business member in the Cork region.
Based in Macroom, Nutricia Infant Nutrition forms the Medical Division of the Danone group, manufacturing specialised infant and toddler milks.
Currently the Macroom manufacturing facility is undergoing a €50 million expansion which will see the creation of 40 permanent jobs as well as 200 construction jobs whilst the development is taking place.
On completion, the facility will be the largest and most technologically advanced manufacturing centre in Danone Baby Nutrition's Global network.

The expansion will result in a trebling of capacity and 98% of the output from Macroom will be exported and commercialised in more than 60 countries worldwide.
Donal Dennehy, General Manager of the manufacturing facility in Macroom said "we are delighted to be the 150th member of such an innovative initiative and we look forward to working with the SMILE team in identifying opportunities ahead." Read More...

60 Seconds with...

Nick Barker: a SMILE member that has attended our exchange events in the past discusses his production company Upcycle and what kinds of waste he is using to create great new products.
Q: What is Upcycle?
A: UpCycle is an Irish Design / manufacturer of eco friendly products.
Q: You have created a skipping rope from a water bottle?
A: Yes, it is made from the waste created during the lifecycle of a plastic water bottle. The handle is made from bottles that are considered waste due to fault. The rope is made from recycled plastic drink bottles and the connection between the rope and the handle is a reused bottle cap.
Q: What is one of your most successful products and what did you use to make it?
A: The JarLamp; They are made from re-using glass jars, a hole is drilled in the cap and a lamp fitting is offered through.
Q: What interesting product are you devising now at the moment?
A: The Stool & Shelf; This is a system of up-cycling functional furniture from commercial waste material. The Stool & Shelf steel piped structure is made from recycling scrap metal from the car scrap yard. The plastic surfaces are off cuts that are currently considered waste. I re-use this waste as the material for Stool & Shelf's surfaces.

For more on the products that Nick Barker produces click here.

Connect Meeting Macroom-E

We CONNECT

with business at Macroom-E : At this month's CONNECT Business Network meeting in Macroom-E Enterprise Centre Michelle Green made a presentation to the large group of business in attendance. The CONNECT meetings are all about businesses in the area getting together to make contacts, share ideas, opportunities and solutions to challenges and so this was a great opportunity to showcase the benefits SMILE can have for business. The next meeting is Wednesday 7th of September.
Soap

Resource of the Month

SOAP: The re-use of soap can have enormous benefits both to the environment and to a businesses bottom line. With thousands of hotel rooms in Ireland, huge numbers of soap bars are discarded every day. With this in mind there is huge potential for hoteliers to divert tonnes of waste from landfill. One example is a charity in the US that collects used soap from hotels, melts it and reshapes it to form new bars that are then sent to developing countries in an effort to raise awareness of sanatation standards. Have you any uses for the Resource of the Month?
Another Successful Exchange

Another Exchange Materialised!!

Cork City Enterprise Board: had 8 large pieces of material that they uploaded as a resource on our website. The material would have otherwise went to landfill but the Cheeky Cherubs, an early years school in Cork City, saw their chance for creativity and have made a successful exchange. The staff at the school said that they will be able to use the material for arts & crafts and for sensory exploration of the different types of material with the children. Cork City Enterprise board have also benefited by saving on the cost of disposal.
