Global Action Plan workshops resume in Cork

Global Action Plan workshops resume in Cork

Cork Environmental Forum will deliver 7 separate Global Action Plan courses throughout County Cork between now and the end of the year. The forum's new Education and Community Project Officer Éanna Dowling is currently organising the courses. He is keen to hear from you if you or your group would like to participate.

Over 670 people throughout Cork have already completed the enjoyable and effective course and they have made significant changes to their household habits, saving money and reducing their environmental impact.

Global Action Plan is a 6 workshop course for householders designed to reduce your impact on the environment and reduce your bills. It covers Waste, Energy, Transport, Water, Consumerism and Community. Participants are asked to complete a lifestyle assessment form before and after the course, thereby noting the changes they have made in their own homes.

By the end of the 6 workshops, participants reflect on their experiences and are often impressed by their achievements. Sorting out the household's energy, waste and consumerism practices has a long lasting effect on the household's budget and on its environmental impact.

SECAD (South and East Cork Area Development) and WCDP (West Cork Development Partnership) are supporting the delivery of the courses in their areas.

You can contact Éanna Dowling on eanna@cef.ie if you would like to participate or if you require further information on Global Action Plan courses happening in your area.

You can find more information about the GAP course here.

Mandala Painting Workshops

In Sanskrit, the ancient sacred language of India, Mandala means circle.   Mandala is traditionally a geometric projection of the world, it belongs to a symbolic universe representing two aspects of life, the material and the divine, spiritual dimension.

Nowadays, Mandala can be used and lived as an artistic expression that can guide us in the search for our Being. It helps us to reconnect ourselves with our inner centre, to take central aspects of our lives back, to bring us to the here and now, to create space for consciousness and new, positive understanding. That's why it is an amazing meditative technique, that works through the symmetric repetition of forms and colours, creating space and silence within. Geometry becomes the ground for creativity to blossom, a starting point from where everyone can discover to 'be able' and be amazed.

To attend  it is NOT necessary to know how to draw/paint or to have any artistic skills.

Free Energy Survey - Cork City

Hello to all members of Cork Environmental Forum

I would like to tell you a little bit about the free energy survey ESB Energy Services is offering under the name of 'HALO' in Cork City at the moment.

FREE ENERGY SURVEY

HALO is the Home Energy Efficiency Programme from ESB Energy Services. As part of ESB's contribution to the National Energy Efficiency Action Plan this programme offers the homeowner an independent FREE home energy survey which assesses attic & exterior wall insulation, boilers & heating controls, windows, draught proofing & lighting.

Upon application, our call centre will arrange for a qualified surveyor to conduct a detailed energy survey at an agreed time with the applicant.

The survey includes an assessment & recommendations concerning the above list of measures, a list of one-stop-shop contractors, details of applicable SEI grants, and a list of financial institutions offering lending packages at preferred rates. This will enable homeowners to make their homes more comfortable, more energy efficient and will result in savings on fuel bills!

Areas initially targeted for leaflet drops in Cork City are:  Bishopstown, Sunday's Well, North Central, Ballyvolane, Ballinlough, Blackrock, South Douglas Rd., Ballyphehane & Glasheen, with the rest of the city & county to follow at a later date. Our aim is to reduce CO2 emissions nationally, boost local economies by encouraging remedial building works, help homeowners to reduce their fuel bills and improve the housing stock. We would appreciate your contribution in encouraging homeowners to take up the scheme.

For further information / to join, please contact or Call Centre: 1850 372 333 or log on to our web site at www.esb.ie/energyservices

OPEN DAY at the Nano Nagle for National Organic Week

FARM OPEN DAY

 National Organic Week 2009

The Nano Nagle Centre for HERITAGE, SPIRITUALITY & ECOLOGY is situated on 32 acres of land which is farmed organically by a community of Presentation Sisters in the heart of the Blackwater Valley.

To celebrate, National Organic Week, the Nano Nagle Centre for HERITAGE, SPIRITUALITY & ECOLOGY are hosting a Farm Open Day on the evening of Wednesday 16th September (4pm – 7pm), where members of the public and media will be invited to visit our farm and experience how and where local organic food is produced. There will be plenty of scope to meet the animals in residence, which include some pedigree Kerry cows, mountain sheep, 200 laying hens, 2 donkeys, 2 cats and 3 khaki campbell ducks! The polytunnels, kitchen garden, field scale vegetables and allotment project are a great example of the variety of crops that can be locally and organically produced in Ireland.

In line with this year's Organic Week theme, we are hosting a cookery demonstration which will given by Clodagh McKenna.  She will be cooking up a storm on a barbeque, using fresh organic produce from the farm and from other local artisan producers. There will be lots of organic delights to sample, emphasising the message that good quality organic ingredients make great tasting healthy meals.

Activities Planned for the Day

-          Guided farm walks – including beef, sheep and poultry

-          Tour of kitchen, herb and field scale vegetable gardens

-          Tour of tunnels showing the possibility of growing organic food all year round

-          Powerpoint presentation on the Sustainable Energy Features of the Centre

-          Renowned chef Clodagh McKenna doing a cookery demonstration using organic produce from the farm.

-          Sampling and tasting organic food and mingling with like minded foodies

Organic Products on Display/Sampling

We will host a farmers market where we will sell our eggs and seasonal organic produce from our gardens and a selection of organic preserves. Organic teas, coffees and treats along with homemade organic cordials will be aplenty.

We will also invite other local producers from our on site farmer's market to come and set up a stall.

Music will be provided by a group of young local traditional musicians.

Leaflets on organic food, growing vegetables, sustainable agriculture and relevant courses will be available.

Cork Branch Irish Wildlife Trust - email list

Hi,
I am writing on behalf of the Cork Branch of the IWT to ask if anyone would like their name to be added to the Cork Branch email list. This is a list where there is no charge but information is sent out on IWT events and other points of interest with regard to wildlife.
We are a voluntary group which started in 2007. Our aims are to encourage and educate people living in the Cork region on wildlife issues. We do not charge for membership as we take the view that an interest in wildlife is of fundamental importance. We only charge where there is a charge placed on us to organise an event.
Our next event is the 27th Sept in Glenbower Wood where we will be identifying mushcooms. Places must be reserved for this event. There is no charge. In October a group of us will visit Killarney NP and listen to the rutting of the deer and in November a whalewatching day.
If you would like your name on the list please reply to this email.
Thank you for your time.
Best wishes

Subject: HERITAGE TREE HUNT

Dear All,

A survey of the Heritage Trees of Ireland is being undertaken by the
Tree Council of Ireland in association with, and part-funded by, The
Heritage Council, Crann and The Irish Tree Society.  We are looking for
help in finding out about as many trees as possible and would be
extremely grateful if you could tell us about any you know of and
forward this to as many people as possible. For example, historical
societies, archaeological groups, community groups, environmental
groups.

A heritage tree can be defined as one of cultural, ecological or
historical interest because of its age, size or condition. The project
is being undertaken as an extension of the Tree Register of Ireland
which is a record of Ireland's Champion Trees.

We want our heritage and ancient trees to survive as long as possible
and to do this we need to protect them. The only way we can do this is
to know where they are. We need to find them, map them, photograph them
and record them.

We want to hear about giant, important, mysterious, sacred, historical,
fabulous, bizarre-looking or ancient trees, and generally trees with a
story! There are all sorts of trees that would qualify for inclusion,
for example: rag trees; hanging trees; trees at holy wells, military
trees (planted in military formation to commemorate battles); those of
exceptional girth, height or age; any associated with historical events,
people or structures; and those which are important to a community.

Some of the most well-known examples are the 'Hungry' Tree at King's
Inns, Dublin which is a London plane that appears to be consuming a
bench; Lady Gregory's 'Autograph' Tree at Coole Park, South Galway, a
copper beech which has been signed by WB Yeats, his brother Jack, George
Bernard Shaw, the poet John Masefield, Sean O'Casey and other famous
people.

However, not all heritage trees are so dramatic; they can, in fact, be
quite unremarkable in appearance. For example, a lone hawthorn tree has
been included in the survey as it marks the summit of Freestone Hill,
Co. Kilkenny and folklore prevents its removal.

If anyone has information on any trees like these we would be delighted
to hear from you!

You can contact us on the website, www.treecouncil.ie or email Kate
Crane: cranoggin@eircom.net or telephone: 01 4931313 (Tree Council of
Ireland).

I have attached a short document with examples of some the trees we have
recorded so far with pictures just to give an idea of the type of things
we are looking for.

Many thanks and I look forward to hearing from you,

Kate Crane
